How safe is your site for visiting drivers
7 February 2006
Every year there are 70 people killed and approximately 2000 more are seriously injured in incidents that involve workplace transport. These incidents often occur in a lorry park or yard while goods are being delivered. In many cases it is the driver who is injured. Make your site user friendly for your own employees, visitors and delivery drivers to help reduce these statistics.
To ensure your site is a safe place to visit for visitors and drivers, please find below some top tips:
Ten tips for a safer site
• Ensure good lighting in all areas - check bulbs regularly
• Ensure delivery areas are kept tidy – remove crates, bins, rubbish etc
• Mark out parking areas for vehicles with paint
• Keep pedestrians apart from any vehicles
• Ensure relevant employees have high visibility vests or jackets - and wear them.
• Avoid reversing if possible – could you make your site one way?
• Send information about deliveries to your site to drivers before they arrive
• Drivers - check you have site information before you leave your depot
• Keep mirrors clean to help cope with blind spots
• Drivers stay in safe area, the rest room or the cab during unloading
