Macmillan named as official charity - 5 October 2005

24 October 2005

MacmillanWe are extremely pleased to announce our corporate decision to make Macmillan cancer relief our company’s official charity.

Macmillan Organisation
Macmillan Cancer Relief was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan for the care and welfare of cancer patients and their families.  There are currently over 4,000 Macmillan Health Care professionals in the UK of which over 3,000 are Macmillan Nurses.

They receive no regular government funding.  All the help is paid for by donations, legacies, fundraising events and support from trusts and  companies.  In 2004 they raised £80 million of which £½ million was generated in Bedfordshire.  They currently have 70,000 volunteers within the UK and thousands of corporate partners.

With one in three people affected by cancer at some point in their life and 739 new cases diagnosed each and every day, the need for more Macmillan nurses and doctors, high quality environments for cancer care and grants for people in financial difficulties is greater than ever.

The support they offer comes in many forms, including emotional support on the telephone, as well as regional groups and counselling.  They offer  financial help to support people who may not be able to work due to their illness.  They have also created 130 care and treatment centres in hospitals and the community.

The Health and Safety People look forward to organising fundraising events for this worthwhile cause – which began with a dress down day on Friday 30th September.
