Steeplejack firm fined following HSE visit

10 April 2006

Following a routine visit from the HSE, steeplejack firm Venturi Steeplejack were fined for allowing workers to walk over a fragile roof.

On 7 February, HSE Inspector Roger Amery reported to Loughborough magistrates that he had observed two Venturi Steeplejack employees walking across a single-skinned asbestos cement roof.  Amery reported that he had issued a Prohibution Notice to stop the men working until the necessary safety measures had been implemented.

Venturi was handed a £4000 fine and ordered to pay full HSE costs of £1106.  The company pleaded guilty to breaching reg.9(2) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 by failing to ensure suitable platforms, coverings or means of support or protection were provided.

In mitigation, Venturi stated that it was difficult too supervise all its employees when they were scattered across the length and breadth of the UK.  It also stated that it had co-operated with the HSE and had revised its risk assessment procedures.

Inspector Amery stated “Although there were no injuries, the case serves to illustrate that the HSE doesn’t only prosecute after accidents have happened when there is unsafe work at height.  Proceedings are brought on a proactive basis as well.”
