In this month's issue we cover the progress of the corporate manslaughter bill. Having been before the Lords Committee, peers have voted to extend the planned corporate manslaughter law to include deaths in prisons and police cells. We also include details on the FREE CDM 2007 seminars we are running during April. Additionally we have articles on the new penalties for drivers who continue to use hand held mobile phones whilst driving, a feature on health and safety management systems, some information on preventing slips and trips in the workplace and details on the increase in construction fatalities.
Prosecutions this month include a successful prosecution for a non-injury case and a third prosecution for a Gloucester based company in just two years. Working at height prosecutions include an incident in which a school boy fell whilst on work experience and a 'shambles' incident where 5 companies and individuals were fined a total of £87,500.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have issued warnings following prosecutions for the correct use of bed rails in care homes, the correct use of water chiller systems to prevent Legionnaires disease and the need for conducting appropriate risk assessments before conducting unloading activities.
